Canine
physical therapy in action
|
On
February 15, 2007, Caring Canines
participated in the American Physical Therapy Association's National
Conference in Boston at the Hynes Convention Center. A team of 11 dogs
and handlers were the main attraction at the first-ever presentation
of a teaching seminar entitled "An Approach to Canine Physical
Therapy." The seminar was presented by physical therapists, and canine
rehab specialists from all over the country who used the Caring Canines
dogs as subjects for their demonstrations.
Each dog rotated through various "stations" that utilized different techniques and apparatus important in canine rehabilitation and therapy. These included: the balance board, the therapy ball, an obstacle course, gait analysis, palpation and range of motion. Physical therapists use these routinely to assess the dog's needs and to plan a course of treatment. The conference was fascinating and educational. The Caring Canines teams were certainly the stars of the show and were rewarded with lots of patting and delicious treats. Range of motion demonstrations
