Caring Canines Visiting Therapy Dogs, Inc.

Honoring Thayer

From Thayer's "hu-mom," Wendy.

Thayer was a gentle and loving dog who just wanted to be with people.  And being a Weimaraner, Thayer believed from the day he was born 10  years ago that he was a person instead of a dog.  I think that’s what made Thayer such a special therapy dog.

In his puppy years, I wanted to get Thayer involved with therapy work, but knew that he had a few years to work out his weimaraner ways before he was calm enough to handle visits.  I’m so glad I was able to get him involved in Caring Canines.  It is a special group of people bonded through the love of their dogs and wanting to share the free spirit and happiness of their dogs with others.  I’m especially grateful that Thayer and I had an opportunity to attend a visit just two days before his illness became apparent.  Thayer loved meeting people as it was the perfect opportunity for individuals to pet his velvety, floppy ears and give him lots of pats and attention.

Thayer especially loved visiting with elementary-age boys as they matched his spunk and enthusiasm. At one facility, the boys would get very excited looking out the window as we drove up and called out his name.  In the backyard, the boys would try to outrun Thayer (which they never did), attempt to teach him the game of basketball, and find him the perfect sticks for chewing.  At the end of the visit, they would all clamor for his card and ask when we would be returning.

Happy Memories of Thayer

Although Weimaraners were originally bred to accompany hunters in the field all day, Thayer prefered to hunt and seek out the creature comforts in life.

Like hoping for some sausage at a picnic....

Catching some rays at the beach

Or even showing some of his hunting instincts when he becomes obsessed
with the float.  (And Thayer doesn't even like to get wet!)

But best of all, sleeping on the couch!
